MOVING CHECKLIST

When it comes the time that you and your family have decided that you will be moving, you will need at least two months of planning prior to the Moving Day for proficient preparations. The following checklist broadly covers all of the little components that will construe to a final smooth-beautiful moving day:

Two months prior to Moving Day

Using professional movers? Get a few quotes from moving companies.

Moving your-self? From a few trucking rental companies get costs.

Prepare a floor plan of your new property (ie., furniture and appliance)

Begin filing all moving paperwork (ie., receipts).

Arrange transferring school records.

Get your new property ready for your suiting – so begin contacting carpenters, plumbers, roofers, change the locks on all the doors in your new property.

Six weeks prior to Moving Day

Begin filling out post office change-of-address forms

Make arrangements for storage if necessary.

Depending how far you move from current to new property, you might want to ask your doctor for referrals, and obtaining all medicals.

If you have antiques, or pieces of art, and/or other valuables – get them appraised.

Begin cleaning out all closets and drawers.

Begin consuming foods and using cleaning supplies that cannot be moved.

Four weeks prior to Moving Day

It's time to letting the utility service company know that you will be disconnecting of all utility services at your old home, and will be needing connection of them at the new one.

If moving yourself, it is time to reserve a rental truck for as long as you will need it for.

If packing yourself, obtain packing materials (ie., boxes, etc)

Check with your insurance company to see if possessions will be covered during transportation.

Make travel plans.

Do you need moving permits?

Plan a moving sale.

Three weeks prior to Moving Day

Dispose of items that cannot be moved (ie., hazardous/flammable liquids).

Auto registration for transfer (if moving to another Province).

If you are moving in or out of an apartment, arrange for elevator use.

Comprise your moving sale.

Two weeks prior to Moving Day

Dispose of anything not sold from moving sale or give it to a Goodwill centre!

Give maintenance to your car in preparation for the move.

Cancel newspaper delivery.

Change your address – give your contacts your new address.

Put aside critical items (checkbook, tools, paper plates, paper cups, bandages credit cards, personal phone book, ID, flashlight, keys, toiletries,).

One day prior to Moving Day

Transfer bank account.

Take pet-animal(s) to vet for immunization (if necessary).

Drain power equipment of oil and gas. Drain water hoses.

Defrost the refrigerator, freezer.

Let movers pack belongings (unless it's a do-it-yourself move).

Disconnect and prepare major appliances for move.

Set aside anything that will travel in your car so it will not be loaded on the truck.

Confirm arrival time of your moving van/truck.

If moving yourself, dismantle beds and other large furniture.

Moving Day

Note all utility meter readings.

Read your bill of lading and inventory carefully before signing. Keep this paperwork in a safe place.

Check your belongings carefully and note on the inventory paperwork any damaged items.

Be prepared to pay your mover with cash, certified check, or traveler's checks unless other arrangements have been made in advance.
